A West African figurine from the Baule or Baolet people. The figurine is modeled in the form of a female figure with classic Baule features and increased sexual characteristics. The figurine is covered with red and black pigments. The red colour is associated with birth and rebirth in most African traditions and is therefore viewed as a female colour. The bright red implies the highest sexual attractiveness and fertility, and refers to a woman who promises to bear her future husband many children. Circa: the first half of the 20th century.
