An antique Chinese export gilded and black lacquered hand carved box. Can be used as a sewing box or as a tea caddy. The rectangular section body is decorated with panels representing family scenes in a courtyard, and patterned decoration throughout retains original hardware. A cover is adorned with a panel representing a scene in a courtyard to the center and surrounded by panels with scenes in a landscapes, and medallions with various animals surrounded by foliage and foliate scroll ornaments. Scalloped rims. Completed with a key and a metal insert featuring an embossed scene on the top of the cover. Unmarked. Circa: early 19th century.
