A French National Order of the Legion of Honor is shaped like a Maltese Star with five arrowhead shaped handles inspired by the Maltese Cross. The central disk of the front side is covered with gilding. It depicts the head of Marianne, surrounded by the inscription of the French Republic on a blue enamel ring and the date 1870. The central disc on the reverse is also gilded. It depicts crossed tricolors surrounded by the motto of the Legion Honneur et Patrie on a blue enamel ring. The badge is suspended from an enameled laurel and oak wreath. It is presented in a red box with the inscription inside and outside. The Order was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
