A student at the Vienna Academy, Kaufmann studied in Norway, Holland, Germany, Franconia, Danzig, Königsberg, and Italy, Naples, Rome, Venice, which gave him the motives for his numerous landscapes and cityscapes, including a remarkable number of views in Venice. He signed much of his work pseudonymously, using a variety of names, including C. Charpentier, B. Lambert, and Charles Marchand, amongst many others.
