Lot 0082: ATTRIBUTED TO WILLEM DE KOONING MIXED MEDIA PAINTING

41 reviews

Attributed to Willem de Kooning, American, Dutch, German, 1904 to 1997, mixed media, mostly ink, painting on paper depicting an Abstract Expressionist composition made in the Rome or Waves techniques. Heavy paint layers. Signed lower right. Circa: 1950s to 1960s. Framed. Three black and white portrait photographs are on the backside. Provenance: Private Las Vegas, Nevada estate, acquired from Brooklyn, New York estate. Willem de Kooning is a leading artist and sculptor of the second half of the 20th century, one of the leaders of Abstract Expressionism. De Kooning used a variety of tricks to pump up the sensuously inviting tactility of his surfaces, including his famous wet on wet technique of mixing salad oil in the pigment, in order to make it slithery, fluid and receptive to sustained periods of work. It didn't dry out fast. As he worked he would repeatedly scrape down the surface, leaving layered smears and traces of underpaint to show through, like insistent memories of past encounters piling up one on top of the other. He rarely painted either males or reclining figures. One of a kind artwork.

Overall good vintage condition. Signs of age and wear. Some tears around the edges. Large tear in the top middle. Refer to photos. Sold As Is.
Frame 29 3/4 x 23 3/4 in. Image 23 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. All measurements are approximate.
