James Abbott McNeill Whistler, English, French, 1834 to 1903, a collection of four etchings on paper. The collection includes Plate VI San Giorgio, Plate VIII The Balcony, Plate IX Long Venice, Old Battersea Bridge, one of the Twenty Six Etchings, Second Venice Set, from a proof in the possession of Dr. G. Bellingham Smith. Each is signed with a monogram, and stamped in the plate, lower left. Framed. James Whistler is known for Figure, landscape, and portrait painting, etching. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, James Whistler became one of the most influential late 19th century American painters and etchers, although he lived primarily in England. He worked in a wide variety of styles that included Impressionism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau. He was especially influential in the Tonalist movement and was a catalyst for those who wanted to break away from prescribed academic methods, credited with being the first American modernist to influence European art.
