Lot 0318: CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF ARHAT DAMO BODHIDHARMA

41 reviews

An antique Chinese Qing dynasty bronze figure depicting a seated Arhat Damo Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma is depicted as bald, wearing loose, flowing robes, with thick eyebrows and a beard and a raised palm. Bears a four character Chinese Qing dynasty mark at the base of the figure. Here he is with a stern expression on his face, which is characteristic of the iconography of this saint and makes him even more recognizable. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Horacio Fabrega, Pittsburgh, PA. Bodhidharma was a semi legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century CE. He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Chan Buddhism to China, and is regarded as its first Chinese patriarch. According to a 17th century apocryphal story found in a manual called Yijin Jing, he began the physical training of the monks of Shaolin Monastery that led to the creation of Shaolin kungfu. He is known as Damo in China and as Daruma in Japan. In Japan, stylized Daruma figurines are part of the tradition of celebrating the new year.
