Lot 0269: HARRY BERTOIA MODERN METAL GONG VASE SCULPTURE

41 reviews

After Harry Bertoia, Italian, American, 1915 to 1978, a Mid Century modern vase having a gong shaped form, the sides with decorative applied metal bits, raised on two trestle feet. The surface is covered with a green patina. Stamped to the underside: DMB 86. Note: Harry Bertoia was a sculptor and furniture and jewelry designer who was a successful designer at the mid-century furniture company Knoll. Bertoia famously designed their Diamond chair introduced in 1952 and still sold today. He would later devote his artistic energy towards innovative sculpture, finding ways to bend and stretch metal so that when crossed with wind or touch, it would create different sounds. He has also performed concerts with these pieces, even recording a series of albums known as Sonambient music. From a young age Bertoia was friends with other prominent designers such as Walter Gropius and Ray and Charles Eames, and he regularly designed jewelry for his friends. Today his works can be found in various private and numerous public collections, including The Art Institute of Chicago, Denver Art Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., Museum of Modern Art, New York, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
