An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted icon, Joy to All Who Mourn, All the Sorrowful Joy, and the offended Intercessor, the hungry Nurse, the strange Consolation, the overwhelmed Shelter, the sick Visitation to the Most Holy Theotokos. These words are often placed on the icon as inscriptions over a group of people suffering from illnesses or worldly sorrows, who prayerfully fall to the Mother of God standing in full growth in the radiance of the mandorla. In addition to the image of the Mother of God, the icon traditionally includes images of people overwhelmed by illnesses and sorrows, and angels performing good deeds on behalf of the Mother of God. The Mother of God is depicted full length, standing in a mandorla and surrounded by angels, often with the Child on her left arm. Above in the clouds is the Lord of Hosts or the New Testament Trinity. The Virgin Mary stands on the clouds.The mixed media icon with egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood panel. Titled upper right and left. Inscribed with a Church Slavonic text, lower to the center. Circa: 19th century. This type of icon appeared in Rus immediately after the adoption of Christianity.
