Lot 0235: PRE COLUMBIAN TAIRONA TUMBAGA MANNER BIRD SCULPTURE

41 reviews

A Pre Columbian Tairona Tumbaga culture manner sculpture of a bird. A tumbaga, alloy of copper and gold, ornament, cast using the lost wax process, with its surface enriched by the depletion method to bring out the golden color of the alloy. The sculpture is made in the form of a broad tailed bird, its curved wings spread wide, ornamented with a row of swirls. A long beaked nose with a curl on its upper part and bulging eyes form the birds face, while sprays of feathers emerge from the sides of the head. The Tairona produced some of the most complex, beautiful gold alloy objects ever made in the New World. This would have been worn by someone powerful in the society, and it may have indicated a clan affiliation or role. Mounted on a stand. Antique and Vintage Pre Columbian Manner Sculptures, Figures, Figurines, Home Decor, Interior Design, and Collectibles.
