41 reviews

A black and white photograph of Nikita Krushchev during the 902nd Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York City in autumn 1960. The photo comes from the United Press International Inc. archive and is accompanied by a document describing of the moment when the photo was taken: September 29, 1960, Khrushchev pounds his desks with fists during British prime minister Harold Macmillans speech. Nikita Khrushchev was a Soviet politician who served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964. His participation in the UN General Assembly in 1960 became scandalous due to the so-called shoe-banging incident, when Khrushchev pounded his shoe on his delegate-desk in protest at a speech by Philippine delegate Lorenzo Sumulong.
