Kogyo Tsukioka, Japanese, 1869 to 1927, an original antique wooblock print on paper, Kusu no Tsuyu, from the series, Pictures of No Performances, Nogaku Zue, 1899. Published by Matsuki Heikichi. One of 261 prints from the series Nōgakuzue, Illustrations of Noh. The print depicts a scene from the play Kusu no tsuyu in which Masashige, fearing his imminent death, has his retainer read his last words of advice to his son, Masatsura. Right Margin Description of Scene. Marked with a red letter seal in a round shape with twin fish, upper right. Inscribed upper to the center and to the center left. Kogyo Tsukioka, sometimes called Kogyo Sakamaki was a Japanese artist of the Meiji period. He was a student and adopted son of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and also studied with Ogata Gekko. Although Kogyo sometimes painted other subjects, for most of his career he made pictures of Japanese noh theatre, either as large scale paintings or colored woodblock prints.
