Charles Henry Ebert, American, 1873 to 1959, an oil on canvas laid on board painting Old Lyme Harbor, 1959. Signed by the artist on the lower left. Framed and has an attached metal plaque with a title, date and name of the artist. Note: Best known for his paintings of Monhegan Island and Old Lyme Connecticut, Charles Ebert was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ebert enrolled in the Art Academy of Cincinnati, a year in New York at the Art Students League followed, and then to Paris. From 1894 to 1896 he studied at the Julien Academy in Paris under Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. When Ebert returned to the United States in 1896 he opened a studio in New York City he became a full time illustrator for Life and very soon was widely known as Lifes chief political cartoonist. After four years of illustrating and painting at the same time he began to devote his efforts solely to painting. He began exhibiting in 1907 including the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute, the Corcoran Art Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Art Institute of Chicago, Salmagundi Club, and the Panama-Pacific Exposition.
