A Japanese color woodblock print on paper. The artwork depicts a battle scene with horsemen, archers, and a cart with the Japanese emperor. After an illustration to the Heiji-monogatari by the monk Keion, ca. 1200. Titled The Abduction of Go Shirakawa, Former Emperor of Japan, by Fujiwara No Nobuyori in the Year 1159. The Heiji Monogatari Emaki is a painted narrative handscroll from the Kamakura period, 1185 to 1333. The illuminated manuscript narrates the events of the Heiji rebellion, a short civil war between rival subjects of the cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa of Japan fought in order to resolve a dispute about political power.
