Alexandre Benois, Russian, 1870-1960, an oil on board landscape painting depicting a view of Benrath Palace. Schloss Benrath or Benrath Palace, a Baroque-style pleasure palace in Benrath, which is now a borough of Dusseldorf. It was erected for the Elector Palatine Charles Theodor and his wife, Countess Palatine Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach, by his garden and building director Nicolas de Pigage. Signed on the lower right and titled verso. Provenance: Antikvity, June 19, 2021, lot 118. Alexandre Nikolayevich Benois was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, preservationist and founding member of Mir iskusstva (World of Art), an art movement and magazine. As a designer for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev, Benois exerted what is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet and stage design. One of a kind artwork.
