Lot 0316: PAIR OF EARLY 20TH C WEST AFRICAN WOODEN MASKS

41 reviews

The lot includes an early 20th century hand-carved moon mask made by Baule peoples, Ivory Coast. The face is oval and domed, features narrow oblong slits for the eyes and a small mouth, surrounded by a flat rim of triangular rays. These masks make their appearance at the beginning of the grand mask dances of the Baule people. And a Punu peoples mask depicting a narrow white face painted white with kaolin clay, with full lips, protruding ears and high massive hair. Punu masks represent the idealized beauty of Punu women, and should only be carved by Punu men. Tribal Art, African Antiques And Collectibles For Home Decor.
