41 reviews

Robert Ernst Marx, German, American, 1925 to 2020, ink painting on paper depicting a figurative portrait, 1964. Signed and dated lower left. Framed. Robert Robert Ernst Marx is a German American fine artist with works created through oil paintings, drawings, bronze cast sculptures utilizing a lost wax process, and extremely fine crafted etchings. His unique aesthetics and self expression evolved over time. Early paintings were abstracts, before he drifted into human figurative works. Etchings, in a process called aquatint, where acid is used to create different levels of surfaces to hold the ink was one of the most used media by the artist. Marx was born in Nordheim, Germany in 1925, and is a member of the faculty of the School of Art at Syracuse University. He took his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Illinois in 1953. Since that time he has exhibited in many major national exhibitions. His work has been invited to the Dallas National Print Exhibition, the Victoria and Albert Museum International Exhibition, Washington University International Print Exhibition, Chicago Art Institute American Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture, and the 27th Biennial at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He was also included in the 157th Annual Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He has received numerous prizes including the Roberson Art Center Exhibition first prize, the Rochester Finger Lakes Exhibition painting award; the Louis D'Amanda Memorial Award and Juror's Show Award; and has been honored twice by the Munson Williams Proctor Institute. He is represented in the permanent collection of the latter as well as in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum, Dallas Museum, Milwaukee Art Institute, Washington University, Seattle Art Museum, University of Wisconsin Union, International Mineral and Chemical Co, Syracuse University, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
