Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso, painted in May 1937 by order of the government of the Spanish Republic for the Spanish pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris. The theme of the painting, executed in the manner of cubism and in black and white, is the bombing of Guernica, which took place shortly before, as well as the horror of the April Spanish Revolution, 1931, and the Spanish Civil War, 1936 to 1939.
