He studied under various artists like Charles Hawthorne, George Bridgman, and others. His works were exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Georgia State College for Women, High Museum of Art and Mecklenburg Court House. He was a teacher at the Grand Central School of Art. In 1946, Frank Herring and his wife, Francis Herring, established the Burnsville Painting Classes in conjunction with another artist, Edward Shorter.
