He graduated from Tokyos Sophia University. A year later he began a three year course at Art Center for Design in Los Angeles. At the end of 1976, he moved to New York and began his way as a commercial photographer. Many of his most successful commercial pictures exploit the use of flash in novel ways. Cockrells jazzy commercial style has brought him continuing and growing success. He worked regularly for Esquire, Fetish, Savvy, Wet, Prime Time, Industrial Design, and other magazines.
