An antique Russian orthodox icon of the Mother of God of Kazan. Hand painted with oil on a wood panel, the silver frame is chased and repousse. Hallmarks: 84 silver standard and the other marks of the manufacturer. Circa the second half of the 19th century. Mother of God of Kazan was a holy icon of the highest stature within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patroness of the city of Kazan, and palladium of all of Russia and Rus, known as the Holy Protectress of Russia.
