Antique Russian Orthodox The Domination of the Virgin Mary icon. The body of the Virgin Marys is surrounded by apostles and two bishops, a standing figure of Christ is depicted passing the soul of Mary (in the shape of a swaddled infant) to two angels who will take it to heaven; above the figure of Christ appears a six-winged seraphim spreading its wings in a sign of protection. Hand painted with tempera, gold leaf and gesso on a wood panel with kovcheg. Hallmarks on the frame: 84 silver standard and the other marks of the manufacturer. circa the late 19th century.
