Three vintage Korean chaekgeori panel paintings. Framed. Chaekgeori is a genre of still-life painting from the Joseon period of Korea that features books as the dominant subject. The chaekgeori tradition flourished from the second half of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century and was enjoyed by all members of the population, from the king to the commoners, revealing the infatuation with books and learning in Korean culture. The present lot on auction forms part of the Kuranda's family estate. The provenance of items can be traced back to Felix Kuranda in 19th century Austrian Empire, member of a well known family of bankers and politicians, directly related to the Karpeles, Wittelshofer, Milne and Lederer families. The most chronological recent lots are former belongings from USA veteran Major Thom Stellinger-Scott related through marriage with the Kuranda lineage. He was a veteran of the Korean War as well as a reputed amateur photographer and artist. The Stellinger-Scott family resided for decades at Montauk Long Island NY.
