Lot 0126: SIX VINTAGE BOOKS ON CHINESE AND JAPANESE ART

41 reviews

A collection of six vintage books on Asian art. Art at Work: The Chase Manhattan Collection by Marshall Lee, David Rockefeller, Willard C. Butcher. Published hardcover by Dutton Adult, 1st edition in 1984. More than 250 works are illustrated, almost all in color. They are arranged in the order of acquisition, thus giving the reader a clear picture of the collection's development during its first quarter century. China: Dawn of a Golden Age, 200-750 AD by James C. Y. Watt, An Jiayao, Angela Falco Howard, Boris I. Marshak, Feng Zhao, Su Bai. Published hardcover by Metropolitan Museum of Art, First edition in 2004. This book is the first comprehensive survey of Chinese art during the complex era. Lavishly illustrated and produced, the volume presents more than three hundred recent archeological finds: including gold artifacts made by the nomadic peoples from Mongolia, luxury articles of glass and precious metals from Western and Central Asia, early Chinese Buddhist sculptures, and spectacular works in every medium from the Tang period. Essays by distinguished scholars provide a historical background, discuss the various media, and trace the changes in art styles over a period that saw a radical modification of Chinese civilization. A Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Oriental Arts: Japan in 4 volumes by Kadokawa Shoten. Published by Crown Publishers in 1969. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, mylar dj. With 180 full-page color, 336 full-page monochrome plates. This was compiled from the Oriental section of the Encyclopedia of World Art, published by Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Company, Tokyo, 1968.
