A hand-carved mask from the Bamana people, Mali. Made of wood upholstered with metal. The mask represents the legendary ancestor of the Bambara and it is a symbol of protection. N'tomo masks are used in initiation rites and agricultural festivals. The number of horns indicated the sex of the mask. (male: 3 or 6, female: 4 or 8, androgynous: 2,5 or 7.)
