An antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting Juliana the Martyr of Nicomedia and Apostle Andrew the First Called. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, gilding and levkas on a wood board. Circa the 19th Century. Saint Juliana of Nicomedia, on the left, a well known martyr who suffered for the Christian faith in the 4th century. She is often depicted wearing a red or golden robe, symbolizing her martyrdom. Apostle Andrew the First Called, on the right, one of the twelve apostles who preached in various regions, including the lands of future Russia. He is depicted with a traditional diagonal cross, on which, according to tradition, he was martyred. Jesus Christ appears in the heavenly sphere at the top, blessing both saints.
