41 reviews

Antique 19c Russian Icon of the Miracle of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki Regarding Tsar Kaloyan, and the Miracle of the Thessalonian Maidens. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, levkas and gilding on a wood board. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the Myrrh Streaming a Christian saint venerated as a great martyr. The Roman Emperor Maximian Galerius appointed him proconsul in Thessaloniki, but Demetrius was executed for openly preaching Christianity. During the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, 324 to 337 AD, a church was built over the grave of the great martyr Demetrius, and a hundred years later, during the construction of a new church, his relics were discovered. The iconography of this subject received a similar development only in the 17th to 18th centuries. The icon itself was painted by a professional iconographer using the egg tempera technique in one of the Moscow icon painting workshops in the last quarter of the 19th century.
