The Roman Emperor Maximian Galerius appointed him proconsul in Thessaloniki, but Demetrius was executed for openly preaching Christianity. During the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, 324 to 337 AD, a church was built over the grave of the great martyr Demetrius, and a hundred years later, during the construction of a new church, his relics were discovered. The iconography of this subject received a similar development only in the 17th to 18th centuries. The icon itself was painted by a professional iconographer using the egg tempera technique in one of the Moscow icon painting workshops in the last quarter of the 19th century.
