An antique Grand Tour carved Tridacna squamosa shell cosmetic vessel. This type of shell was usually obtained from the Red Sea in Egypt. The shell is carved in the shape of a womans face with a wide headdress with stylized, well detailed patterns. Inside of the shell are carved images of columns inspired by ancient Egyptian art. The shell served as a container for eye cosmetics. Grand Tour was the 17th to early 19th century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper class young European men.
