An antique Russian silver icon pendant representing the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The icon depicts a coronation of the Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven after Her Ascension to heaven. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood oval board. The icon is overlaid with a silver oklad or riza, adorned with chased and engraved patterns. Bears a suspension ring is on the top. Hallmarked with an 84 Russian silver standart and Russian hallmarks, dated 1881 on the oklad and on the suspension ring. The iconography can be traced back to 13th century Catholic Europe. In Russian art, coronation can be traced back to the 17th century. This image became widespread in the 18th and 19th centuries, when many individual icons were created describing the coronation in Heaven.
