41 reviews

Chaim Soutine, Russian, Jewish, French, 1893 to 1943, mixed media, watercolor, color pencils and ink, painting on paper, French Woman, depicting an interior scene with a woman, 1940. Signed and dated lower left. Framed. Inscribed, Chaim Paris, and dated 40, on the backside. Provenance: from the Wende Museum, a paper label is on the backside. Chaim Soutine was a painter of Belarusian Jewish origin who made a major contribution to the expressionist movement while living and working in Paris. Inspired by classic painting in the European tradition, Soutine developed an individual style more concerned with shape, color, and texture than representation, which served as a bridge between more traditional approaches and the developing form of Abstract Expressionism. One of a kind artwork.
