A Russian Soviet era USSR in Construction magazine issue, Number 1, 1930. Published by State Publishing House of the RSFSR. Alternative names, USSR im Bau, URSS en construction, URSS en Construccion, was a Soviet monthly illustrated news and propaganda magazine published from 1930 to 1941 and in 1949. A total of 133 large format issues were released during this period. The first issue of the magazine was published under the editorship of Maxim Gorky. The magazine was aimed primarily at a foreign audience and was published in five languages. In the genre of illustrated news magazines, it became the predecessor of the American Life magazine, which began publication in 1936, the Japanese magazine FRONT and others. The design of the magazine was made in the style of constructivism. Distinctive features of the design were the widespread use of photomontage, insert pages, and the use of the entire range of the photographic contrast scale. The magazine was printed on a rotogravure printing press.Photographers and artists El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko and his wife Varvara Stepanova, Roman Karmen, Georgy Petrusov, Boris Ignatovich, Arkady Shaikhet, Evgeny Khaldey, Mark Markov-Grinberg, Max Alpert, Dmitry Debabov, John Hartfield and many others worked on the illustrations in the magazine. The texts were written by Maxim Gorky, Isaac Babel, Mikhail Koltsov, Valentin Kataev, Yakov Belsky, Eduard Tisse, Sergei Tretyakov.
