Mixed media artwork on canvas by Pierre Soulages, 1919 to 2022, a French artost known as the painter of black, owing to his interest in the color. His artistic practice is titled Outrenoir, Beyond Black, as the paintings he produces play with the light reflected off of the texture of the paint, emphasizing the depth of blackness. Applying the paint in thick layers, Soulages painting technique includes using objects such as spoons, tiny rakes and bits of rubber to evoke a smooth or rough surface. This lot is a fine example of the masters mature work, a high relief juxtaposition of black and blue colors. Signed by the artist and dated 1987 on the backside. Untitled.
