Engraving on paper. French, early 19th century, ca. 1801. The artwork depicts a profile portrait of Tipu Sultan, also spelled Tippoo Sultan, a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India. Titled and marked D apres l original appartenant au Marquis de Wellesley, After the original in possession of Marquess Wellesley underneath. Pencil inscriptions on the margins. Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, 1760 to 1842, was an Anglo-Irish politician and colonial administrator. In 1799, his forces invaded Mysore and defeated Tipu, the Sultan of Mysore, in a major battle. Collectible Graphic Art Prints, Historical Relics, Portraiture.
