Ironically, given that Bowery was renowned for his eccentric dress and passion for make up, Freud painted him here naked, slumped on a low, wide stool in the artists studio. The models fleshy back is almost sculpted by thick layers of paint. This is, in essence, not a traditional portrait but a still life of skin. Lucian Michael Freud was a British painter and draughtsman, specialising in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th century English portraitists. Master of psychological portrait.
