Lot 0442: 1989 VAGRICH BAKHCHANYAN STALIN TEST ZINE

41 reviews

A hand-crafted zine titled Stalin Test by Vagrich Bakhchnyan. Dated 1989 on the cover. Сolor printing on paper, the sheets are intertwined with a rope. Vagrich Bakhchanyan, 1938 to 2009, was a Ukrainian Soviet Nonconformist graphic artist and designer of Armenian heritage. Bakhchnyan is associated with Conceptual Art and Sots Art movements. In 1974, the artist emigrated to the US, where he continued to experiment with Soviet state symbols, using images of political leaders, as well as cultural symbols. Soviet ways of regulating life, such as slogans on bright posters with workers, detailed plans, censuses of trade union members, were combined with ironic allusions to the Western world, as well as to the history of world art. Stalin Test is a 1982 print series where a portrait of Joseph Stalin is superimposed on various backgrounds, such as maps, text, female portraits. Antiquarian Librarian Collectibles, Self Publishing, Artists Book, Livre d Artiste, Soviet Underground Art.
