Attributed to B. Prabha, Indian, 1933 to 2001, oil painting on canvas, Fisherwoman, 1989. Signed and dated, lower right. Completed with a certificated of authenticity, signed by Nayana Sarmalkar. B. Prabha is known for Female portrait, figure, genre easel and mural painting. As a young artist, Prabha moved to Mumbai and studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art. In her lifetime, she showed work in more than 50 exhibitions in India and abroad. In 1956, she had her first exhibition with her husband, B. Vithal, and won first prize at the Maharashtra State Art Exhibition in 1958. B. Prabha has immortalized the fisher women of Mumbai in her paintings. Her representation of these simple, rustic women with their distinctive hairstyles and bright saris is characteristic of her style. Her earlier works were modern, freely rendered paintings.
