Hemendranath Mazumdar, 1894 to 1948, India, oil painting on canvas depicting a female nude portrait. Signed lower right. Hemendranath Mazumdar, a painter, one of the most active supporters of the transfer of the European academic style to Bengali painting. The characters in his paintings were usually light skinned Bengali women from the upper castes. During the 1930s, he worked at the royal courts of Kashmir, Bikaner, Patiala, Cooch Behar, Mayurbhanj and others, earning fame for his portraits and sensual depictions of Bengali women.
