Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel was born in 1881 in Wundsiedel near the Fichtel Mountains, Austria. He was educated at the Munich Academy of Applied Arts, then moved to Rome with his brother in 1897 and made a living selling his drawings. He was educated in church painting at the Tanzenberg monastery near Klagenfurt, Austria. He moved to Vienna in 1988, where he studied painting at the Academy of the Arts. After spending a number of years in Vienna and Munich, he returned to the Academy of the Arts in Vienna in 1906 and became an employee of the Wiener Werkstatte.
