41 reviews

An original oil on canvas on board early painting by Eugene Berman, Russian, American, French, 1899 to 1972. The painting is titled Voiles et filles, Adriatique in French and depicts Boats with red sails. Signed lower right. Additionally inscribed E. Berman, Paris, dated 1928 and titled on the back side. Provenance: the artwork was included in Eugene Bermans first Solo Paris Exhibition in 1928 at Gallerie L Etoile. Eugene Berman was a painter and decorator who became known for his imaginary landscapes and Baroque stage set designs including for ballets and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In Russia he studied under P. S. Naumov and S. Grusenberg. He moved to France in 1918. There he became a leader among the Neo-Romantic artists, who defied the prevalent abstract movements including Cubism and Futurism and focused on expression of human emotion. He and his peers, including Georgio De Chirico, depicted a fantasy world of loneliness and isolation that existed only in their minds. Berman emigrated to the US in 1939. One of a kind artwork. European Modernist Fine Art For Collectors.
