Alexander Robertson James was an American portrait painter. Born in Cambridge, MA in 1890, he was the nephew of writer Henry James. He studied painting while living with Abbott Thayer for six years and then further studied with Frank W. Benson. During the first two years of his marriage, 1918 to 19, he lived and painted in Santa Barbara, CA. James then settled in Dublin, NH where he remained until his demise on Feb. 26, 1946.
