He received training in realist portraiture, oil painting, and landscapes under British painter Charles Palmer. Gangooly was skilled in various genres but was particularly drawn to painting landscapes, especially sunrises and sunsets. He combined the imagery of his hometown of Bengal with European naturalistic methods in his paintings. He received awards both locally and internationally for his work.
