Born in Baroda, Bakre was a founding member of the Bombay Group of Progressive Artists, pioneers of modern art in India. Bakre was one of the founder members of the Progressive Artists Group, which helped in projecting his talent and acted as a catalyst for his work. Bakre became a member of the New Vision Group, a gathering of non figurative and abstract artists.
