Lot 0353: ANCIENT BYZANTINE BRONZE RELIQUARY CROSS 400 TO 700 AD

41 reviews

An ancient Byzantine cast bronze reliquary cross. Circa: 400 to 700 AD. The cross features a two part hinge construction. Each side of the artifact is adorned with engraved religious motifs. The front side shows an engraved figure depicting a crucified Jesus Christ, arms outstretched upon the cross. The inscription above the figure may be a form of religious text or name. The reverse side of the cross displays a central circular medallion with a detailed depiction of a face, likely representing Christ or a saint, surrounded by radiating lines and simple geometric patterns. This cross was used by pilgrims to hold pieces of the True Cross, making it a significant relic of spiritual devotion and historical importance.
