A ceramic tile or plate with a portrait of man. Inscribed, Roma Portrait by H.S. Mendelssohn, lower left, and 18 CS 98 Sculpt, lower right. Marked, Made by Sherwin and Cotton at their works in Hanley in the County of Stafford 1898, on the backside. Framed. Sherwin and Cotton were one of the greatest decorative tile makers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries commencing in 1877 and selling up to Johnsons in 1911.
