Joseph Hartranft is known for Impressionist landscapes, seascapes. An artist who shared a love of painting en plein aire, Uncle Joe as he was referred to or Joseph Beckwith Hartranft joined Caroline Bell, Julia Wickham, Whitney Hubbard, Marguerite Hawkins, Clara Howard and other Peconic Bay Impressionists for painting excursions along the North Fork of Long Island. Hartranft, who had a love for sailing, is said to have painted some 2000 paintings of the North Fork of Long Island. He was the leader of the Tuesday Art Club with founding members Larry Waitz, George McAdams, John Kaelin and Gilbert Miner.
