Lot 0019: LARGE NAPOLEON PORTRAIT ETCHING AFTER BOURGEOIS

41 reviews

A large French Empire period etching on paper depicting a portrait of Napoleon. After the original painting of Napoleon in his study by Jacques Louis David, 1748 to 1825, this portrait was drawn by his student Benjamin Eugene Bourgeois, 1791 to 1818, and engraved by Noel Francois Bertrand, 1784 to 1852, under the direction of David. Dressed in the uniform of an officer of the Grenadiers decorated with the Legion of Honor and the Order of the Iron Crown this iconic depiction soon became the official portrait of the Emperor throughout the Empire. Circa 1810. Framed. Antique European Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
