41 reviews

A Japanese Totai enamel on porcelain ginger jar or box. The ware is enameled with polychrome floral, foliage and geometrical motifs on the tirquoise ground made in the Cloisonne technique. Marked with red ink Calligraphy, on the bottom. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonne on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonne ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item.
