A Tibetan Amitabha Buddha hand painted scroll known as Thangka, or Tanka, a Buddhist painting that serves as a teaching tool. Dated late 19th to early 20th century. The painting is mounted on a textile backing. Amitabha or Amita Buddha is one of the Mahayana Buddhas, especially revered in the Pure Land Buddhist school of Amidism. He is considered to have many worthy qualities: he explains the universal law of existence, the Dharma, in the Western Paradise and accepts under his protection all who sincerely call upon him, regardless of their origin, status, or virtues. The dogma of Amitabhas mercy to those who call upon him is the cornerstone of Amidism. Amitabha is usually depicted in red color, in Tibetan Buddhism, red represents love, compassion, and emotional energy. Of the cardinal directions, Amitabha belongs to the west and therefore symbolizes the setting sun. He personifies the highest power of nature, poured out on the earth, accessible to all sentient beings. Collectible Oriental Buddhist Religious Art.
