An antique 17th century Russian Orthodox icon of Saint Nicholas, Nikola Mozhaisky. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon represents St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, holding a curved saber in one hand and a model of a temple city in the other. On either side of him, in medallions, are depicted Christ and the Mother of God, presenting him with signs of episcopal dignity: the Gospel and the omophorion. This iconographic type, called Nicholas of Mozhaisk, goes back to the 14th century wooden carved image of St. Nicholas from the city of Mozhaisk.
