Gandy Brodie was born in New York City on October 20, 1925 on the lower east side, and was essentially a self taught artist. He was inspired to paint after seeing Van Goghs Starry Night , Picasso and Klee at the Museum of Modern Art, all had a influence on his singular expressionist style. Its interesting to note that artists such as Willen de Kooning and Hans Hoffman had paintings of Brodie's in their personal collections, as do the permanent collections of the Phillips Collection, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art.
